The state of Florida is located in the hot, humid region of the southeastern United States. Snow rarely falls in this part of the country, so snow loads are of little concern. With an average temperature of 70 degrees throughout the year, you're more likely to worry about electrical loads your air conditioner puts on your house. Thunderstorms are common in Florida, however, due to the high humidity in the spring and summer months. High winds and even hail have been reported frequently. During hurricane season, there is also a high alert for them due to the proximity to the gulf stream. Tornadoes are also common. Consider the following when having any home improvement projects done on or around your house:

  • Your roof should include extra lateral and vertical bracing as well as hurricane clips to fortify your roof against high winds. Consider using a higher nominal size lumber than recommended (2x12 instead of 2x10, for example) for added strength.
  • Any exterior glass should be shatterproof and at least of tempered glass strength. .
  • If your house has a basement, make sure there is a sump pump installed and consider transforming this space into a storm shelter for potential tornadoes or hurricanes.
