District of Columbia

The District of Columbia lies near the boundaries of Maryland and Virginia and echoes the climate of the two states. With it's close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, it is greatly affected by these two bodies of water. Strong winter and summer storms bring plenty of rain, thunderstorms, snow showers and the occasional hurricane. Plan on building with a mind set towards wind resistance and strength for heavy snow loads. At the very least, consider the following:

  • Roofs should be constructed with a lean towards durability. Hurricane clips should be used to prevent structural wind damage..
  • Any exterior glass should be tempered or laminate glass.
  • Any areas of the structure below ground level or in active flood zones should have permanent sump pumps installed. Check frequently for proper functionality.
