Colorado residents have a wide range of construction issues to deal with. The landscape of Colorado varies from plains and deserts to 10,000+ foot mountains. With this change comes extreme changes in weather as well. Many parts of Colorado see extreme winters with biting cold and ten plus feet of snow per year. During summer months severe thunderstorms, drought and forest fires plague the landscape. Below is a list of considerations to keep in mind when you are starting any home improvement project:

  • In areas with high snowfall, roof construction should use 2x10 rafters or larger, lateral bracing, hurricane clips, and 3/4" plywood decking to support large roof snow loads. We recommend installing roof heating tape as well to prevent ice damming.
  • For houses in areas prone to forest fires, consider using metal, stone or slate for roofing and stone siding or a fire-resistant fiber cement product such as James Hardie Siding.
  • Care should be taken to insulate your house properly. Double-paned replacement windows are a great way to help insulate your house. Use winterized caulking and weatherstripping around windows and doors and any other opening in your house.
